Go with the flow and drop the Attitude! (I said to me)

Nirve Surf Dragon BikeBeing stubborn doesn’t always work in your favor.

Sometimes you have to go with the flow.  In the case of Drew Brophy and the Nirve Bike 60 second commercial, I was reminded of why my own rule of not getting emotional is a good one.

I admit it – I was extremely frustrated and downright mad when I got the call.

We had put in time and money to film a 60 second commercial for our licensee, Nirve.  The idea was to sell bikes.  Nirve had paid for the advertising spot.  We agreed to produce the video.

Our idea was this:  show the viewer what went into the designing of the bike, then demonstrate how cool it looked when ridden down to the surf spot called Trestles.  The goal: to sell more bikes.

So I was incensed when Transworld Surf Business refused to post our 60 second video.

The reason?  In their words, it was too professionally done.

They wanted it to be lower budget, to match the other 60 second videos that they’ve posted.  But, they added, it was a nice video, just not right for their program.  I guess a spoonful of sugar helps the medicine go down.

They’ve asked that we re-shoot a new video” Steve, my contact at Nirve, said.

We’ve already put time and money into this!”  I argued.

Angry was a mild word to describe how I felt.  I complained about being censored, I complained about having to re-do it, I complained about the world being round.

I put my foot down. We wouldn’t re-shoot.  We’d already paid Crystal Cove Media to produce the first video, for one thing.  For another, I don’t like to stamp my name to anything other than something considered professional.

Brian ILL of Crystal Cove Media changed my mind. “I’ll re-do for no charge.”  He said.

And I decided to stop being stubborn.

Look, we already have some film we can use – we’ll just re-shoot the first 20 seconds.  It’ll work.  It’ll be easy and it will look great.”  Brian was the voice of reason.

We re-shot the video.  Transworld posted it on their home page.

It does look great.  It will sell more bikes.

And I’m reminded as to why going with the flow is an easy way to roll.
